Definition of the Position

The Children’s Education Director (CED) leads, organizes, and guides both regular and special programming designed to engage, excite, nourish and connect children (PreK to fifth grade) and their families at Redlands United Church of Christ. The CED recruits volunteers in conjunction with the covenanting process; trains and supports volunteers who work in the program and performs all aspects of the position with a goal of allowing children to explore issues of faith and community in a safe, supportive, and age-appropriate manner. The CED owns and directs the children’s education program, grades 5 and under. The CED supports, collaborates, and coordinates with the Youth Director for the education program of Youth (grades 6 through graduating 12th)

This is a part-time job and reports to the Senior Minister.

Organizational Responsibilities

The CED reports to the Senior Minister. Duties are carried out in coordination and cooperation with the Education Area Leader(s), and with the guidance of any working committee recruited for specific projects. The Senior Minister, in partnership with the Personnel Committee, oversees the annual performance review.

Education Background

High school diploma or equivalent required. College level coursework in a related field preferred.

Requirements for the Position

• Experience with and passion for working with children (PreK to fifth grade) and their families, from diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to work within and promote the congregation’s progressive theology, social justice commitments, and open and affirming witness.
• Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with church staff, families of children, the Church Board, and the larger congregation to recruit and run a dynamic children’s Christian Education program.
• Adherence to the UCC code of ministerial ethics.
• Demonstrated organization planning and organizational skills.
• Available to work on-site on Sundays.
• Ability to work effectively with technology (Microsoft Teams, computers, internet, social networking, projection equipment, audio visual, etc.).

Specific Duties

• Coordinate Sunday School programs including:
o Recruitment, training and support of Sunday School teachers
o Oversee Live-Scan for volunteers and staff according to church policy and CA state law.
o Selection and ordering of curriculum materials in consultation with Senior Minister and Education Area Leader(s).
o In coordination with Senior Minister to whom childcare worker reports, assists in staffing of nursery if regular childcare attendant is not available.
• Ensure adequate staffing on Sundays 9AM-noon for Nursery and Sunday School that complies with church policies and CA state law. Reports to work every Sunday 9AM-noon.
• Coordinate children’s programming that runs concurrent to Sunday worship services.
• Teach in children’s Christian Education program as needed.
• Attend Education Area meetings and act as a liaison between that committee and the Senior Minister. Work collaboratively with other church leaders.
• Meet regularly with teachers to provide training and review curriculum.
• Arrange for special events or programs.
• Collaborate and coordinate with the Youth Director in regard to programing schedule and mutually supportive opportunities.
• Plan and conduct special worship services as they relate to children.
• Implement an annual recognition for Christian Education volunteers.
• Ensure a safe, clean, and orderly space for the children’s education and programming.
• Communicate regularly with families of children and the broader congregation about children’s programming via electronic and verbal means.
• Provide input to the Education Area Leader(s) and Senior Minister to develop the Education Area budget; work within the approved budget.
• Attend staff meetings, and other church meetings, such as Worship, as appropriate.
• Perform other duties as required.

    Employment is contingent upon a clear Live Scan/Background check. 
    Average of 10 hours per week 
    Probation period is 6 months

    Required: Mandatory Reporter Training; Review and agree to Personnel Policies and RUCC Policy for the Safety and Prevention of Abuse of Minors and Vulnerable Adults; CPR Certification Training preferred.
